According to sources, the NHRC has sent a warning to the Punjab government in response to complaints that physicians and senior employees at an Amritsar hospital are not carrying out their legal obligations to treat patients honestly.

The NHRC stated in a statement that it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that physicians and senior personnel at the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH), Amritsar, are not exercising their lawful duties to attend to patients seriously.

The statement revealed that a media report showed that most physicians leave patients at the mercy of housekeeping and training staff and leave early. It is also stated that the patients are exposed to ill-treatment and are threatened with discharge if a complaint is filed against them.

As a result, it has sent a notice to the chief secretary of the Punjab government, requesting a full report within four weeks. The statement further stated that the efforts taken or suggested to be taken to resolve the issue identified in the news article, as well as the action taken against the physicians and personnel found culpable in the situation, should be included.
